Wasps vs Bees – How to Identify Them Before Arranging Pest Control in Welshpool

The clearer your description when you call, the quicker we can confirm whether it is a wasp nest and arrange the visit, so here is what to note.

Why the description matters

Most people who ring about stinging insects have only glimpsed them. That is fine. A few well-chosen details are all we need to tell wasps from bees in most cases, and to decide the right next step before anyone is sent out.

If you are in Welshpool or the nearby villages, we can cover the area, but it helps us if you have your notes ready. Think of it as three small tasks: look, record, then report.

All of this should be done from a safe distance. Wasps can swarm and sting if threatened, and a nest can hold as many as 2,000 of them by late summer.

It also helps to say how long the insects have been active. A nest noticed only this week is usually smaller than one that has been busy since early summer.

Look: the insect itself

Spend a minute watching, without approaching. Ask yourself these questions and jot down the answers:

These five answers separate most wasps from most bees. A slim, shiny insect with a narrow waist and sharp bands is very probably a wasp.

Start with a pen and a scrap of paper, or the notes app on your phone. Seeing the answers written down makes it easier to read them back to us.

Record: the place and the traffic

Now find where the insects are going in and out. Note the exact spot: a gap under the eaves, a hole in a wall, a crack beside a window frame, a shed roof, a hedge, a bank of earth. Then count how many insects you can see at once and how often they arrive.

Wasps usually produce steady, fast traffic in the warmer hours. A few insects an hour in spring is typical of an early nest, while a continuous stream in August is typical of a large one.

Make a note of the height, too, such as ground level, at head height, or upstairs. It helps the technician plan the visit.

If the entrance is out of reach, simply say so. The technician will bring what is needed and does not expect you to do any climbing.

Record a short voice note if writing is awkward. Saying what you see aloud while you watch often captures details that you would forget later, such as the direction of flight and how the traffic changes through the afternoon.

Report: the photograph

A photograph is helpful, but not at any price. Use the zoom on your phone from several metres away, and stop if the insects begin to follow you. A picture of the entrance is worth more than a close-up of one insect.

If the nest itself is visible, grey and papery like layered paper, include it. If all you can capture is the hole and some blurry traffic, that is still enough to start the conversation.

If bees seem more likely, there is no need to book us. Honeybees and bumblebees are pollinators, and a local beekeeper or bee organisation is the right contact. We do not treat bees.

Do not worry if the photograph looks dull. The aim is to show the place and the activity, not to win a prize for photography, and a plain picture of a gap with insects near it is perfect.

If you are not able to take a picture at all, a clear description will do just as well, and we will ask any questions that remain.

A worked example of a good report

Here is how a useful description might sound. A householder notices insects going in and out under the roof edge at the back of the house. They stand at an upstairs window, watch for a few minutes and note the following: about a dozen insects a minute, slim with a narrow waist and bold black and yellow banding, no pollen visible, entering a gap beside a downpipe about head height from the first-floor window.

That description is short but powerful. It tells us the likely species, the size of the colony, the height and the position, and it means the technician can plan the visit before arriving. It also tells you, calmly and quickly, that you are dealing with wasps rather than bees.

A weaker report would say only that there are stripy insects somewhere at the back. We would still help, but we would ask more questions. If you are in Welshpool or the surrounding villages, a few extra details at the start save time on both sides.

Do not worry about getting every detail right. A confident guess with honest uncertainty is far more useful than silence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most useful detail to tell you?
Where the insects are entering and leaving, plus whether they look smooth and slim or furry and round. Those two facts usually settle it.
Is a blurry photograph good enough?
Yes, if it shows the entrance and the traffic. Never get closer for a sharper image.
Can I describe it by phone if I have no photo?
Yes. A clear description of the colour, shape, location and how many insects you see is enough to start.
