Wasp Control for Handford Restaurants, Pubs and Commercial Premises
Queues, fizzy drinks and open serving hatches make takeaways an easy target, and a quick plan keeps staff and waiting customers out of trouble.
Why takeaways get the worst of it
A takeaway concentrates everything wasps like into a small space: fizzy drinks, sauces, sweet desserts, open bins and a door that opens and shuts all evening. Queueing customers stand holding cans and cartons, and staff behind the counter cannot always step away from a wasp.
The cause is a nest, usually somewhere within reach of the premises. It has grown since early April and by August may hold as many as 2,000 wasps. The wasps near your counter are a small sample of that colony's workers, and more will follow while the nest remains.
The pattern is easy to recognise. On a warm evening, a couple of wasps appear at the hatch; by the following weekend there are a dozen; and by the end of the month staff are dreading a full queue. This growth is not a coincidence, since the nest is expanding week on week and its workers are searching harder for food each day.
What to look at first
A manager can usually narrow down the problem in a few minutes.
- Are wasps coming from one direction, or are they appearing at random?
- Is there a gap in the shopfront, the fascia, the flat roof edge or the shutter box?
- Does a hedge, tree or outbuilding sit near the entrance or back door?
- Are the bins at the side or back overflowing with sweet waste?
If a regular line of wasps heads for a particular gap, you have a likely nest site. Stay well back and do not poke or spray. Simply mark the spot in your mind, or on a sketch for the technician.
Timing offers another clue. Wasps heading out to forage are busiest in the warm part of the day, so watch from a safe spot around early afternoon. Several wasps leaving and returning along the same line in a minute or two is far more telling than a single visitor drifting over the counter. Jot down what you see, including the time, because the technician may ask.
If the line is hard to follow, it can help to ask a second member of staff to watch from another angle. Two sets of eyes often agree on the direction quicker than one, and you avoid anyone leaning out to look.
Immediate housekeeping
Change bins before they overflow and keep lids closed. Rinse out drink cans and bottles before they go into recycling, and wipe the counter, hatch and floor near it. If you serve soft drinks from a fountain, wipe the nozzle and drip tray regularly.
Staff should avoid swatting or running. A wasp that is left alone usually moves on. If one lands on a food container, remove the container calmly and serve a replacement.
Do not spray near food or the counter, and do not try to block a gap. Disturbed wasps defend the colony and can sting repeatedly. If anyone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and apply a cold pack, and call 999 for swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheeze, dizziness or a widespread rash.
Plan the counter layout as well. Keep dessert and sauce stations at the back rather than at the front, and use lids on sauce pots. Where a door is held open for deliveries, put someone on watch so that it is closed again quickly. These small things let you carry on trading while you wait for the technician.
The business side: staying open
A takeaway cannot always close, and a wasp problem should not force it to. Wasp Exterminator Shropshire is open seven days a week with same-day service offered, and evening and weekend appointments are available, so the visit can be placed in a quiet spell, such as mid-afternoon, or before opening.
Treatment is a fixed £80 per nest with one visit guaranteed. Additional nests at one property are £40 each. There is no call-out charge, and nothing is added for location or time of day. Domestic and commercial work are both carried out, and technicians are fully insured and qualified.
Ask the technician whether the empty nest can be taken down, particularly if it hangs over the entrance.
Telling customers
A small sign at the door can prevent alarm: 'We are aware of wasp activity and are dealing with it.' Staff should have a simple answer ready if asked. Avoid naming specific methods, and avoid saying that the problem is finished until the technician has been.
If you deliver, make sure drivers know about the problem too, particularly if they collect bags from a rear door near the flight line. Keep the back area clear until the visit is done.
How to book
Ring 07916 322 280 for a quick chat, or use the contact page form if you prefer. Outside normal office hours, the form can be used to request emergency service. Handford and nearby villages are covered.
Include your trading hours so the visit can be sensibly timed, say where the wasps are heading, and mention anyone allergic to stings among your staff or family so the booking can be prioritised.
Through the rest of the season, keep bins under control and wipe sweet spills at once. In early April next year, include the shopfront and yard in your opening checks.
If you share a unit with other traders, tell your neighbours what you have seen. A nest in the shared roof or wall may affect the whole parade, and one booking, made by whoever manages the building, is better than several separate efforts. Keep the booking details behind the till, so whoever is closing can send them straight away.
